How to choose the right carat size for your hand

Carat weight, finger size, and stone shape all affect how big a ring looks. Here’s how to find your ideal balance.

Different carat sizes on hand

Carat is weight, not size

A common misconception is that carat measures how large a stone looks. It actually measures weight — 1 carat equals 200 milligrams. Two stones of the same weight can appear different sizes depending on their shape and proportions. An elongated oval covers more finger area than a round of the same carat weight, appearing larger despite weighing the same.

How shape affects visual size

ShapeRelative visual size at 1ct
MarquiseLargest — elongated shape maximizes finger coverage
OvalLarge — length creates presence
PearLarge — tapered shape elongates the finger
Emerald cutMedium-large — open facets show clarity
RoundMedium — the classic benchmark
CushionMedium — square-ish with rounded corners
PrincessAppears slightly smaller — weight is distributed deeper

Finger size matters

The same 1-carat stone looks different on different hands. On a smaller finger (size 4-5), a 1-carat stone appears quite prominent. On a larger finger (size 8-9), the same stone may look more modest. As a rough guide, a 1-carat round diamond measures about 6.5mm across — hold a 6.5mm circle against your finger to visualize the proportion.

Our stone size guide lets you compare how different carat weights translate to physical dimensions across every shape we offer — from round to elongated oval. You can see the exact millimeter measurements and understand the visual impact before choosing.

The gemstone factor

Remember that different gemstones have different densities. A 1-carat sapphire is physically smaller than a 1-carat diamond because sapphire is denser. If you want a sapphire that looks the same size as a 1-carat diamond, you’ll need approximately 1.14 carats of sapphire. Our configurator and stone size guide handle this conversion automatically.
