Lab-grown vs natural: what’s the difference?
Everything you need to know about lab-grown diamonds and gemstones — how they’re made, how they compare, and why Mercury & Sol chose them exclusively.

The short answer
Lab-grown stones are chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined stones. A gemologist examining them under magnification cannot tell the difference without specialized equipment designed specifically for origin detection. The only distinction is where they came from: one formed deep underground over millions of years, the other was created in a controlled laboratory in a matter of weeks.
This is not an imitation. Lab-grown diamonds are not cubic zirconia, moissanite, or crystal. They are real diamonds with the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness, the same fire, and the same brilliance as any stone pulled from the earth.
In 2018, the FTC removed the word “natural” from its definition of diamond. A diamond is a diamond regardless of whether it formed in the earth’s mantle or in a laboratory. The scientific community, gemological institutes, and regulatory bodies all agree: lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds.
How they compare
| Property | Lab-grown | Natural (mined) |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical composition | Identical | Identical |
| Hardness | 10 Mohs (diamond) / 9 (sapphire) | Same |
| Brilliance & fire | Same refractive index | Same refractive index |
| Certification | IGI certified (diamonds) | GIA / IGI certified |
| Environmental impact | Significantly lower | Land disruption, water use |
| Ethical sourcing | Fully traceable | Varies by source |
| Visual difference | None to the naked eye | None to the naked eye |
What about value?
Lab-grown stones offer exceptional value at the point of purchase. The same budget that buys a smaller mined diamond can buy a significantly larger lab-grown diamond of equal or better quality. For many customers, the opportunity to wear a more brilliant stone with no ethical compromises is what matters most.
Why Mercury & Sol chose lab-grown
Every stone in our collection is lab-grown. This reflects our belief that luxury should not come at the cost of environmental damage or human welfare. We work exclusively with reputable laboratories maintaining the highest quality standards. Every stone is hand-selected and inspected before entering our workshop.
