The queen of green

Emeralds are a variety of the mineral beryl, colored green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. They have been treasured for over 4,000 years — from Cleopatra’s legendary collection to modern engagement rings. The finest emeralds display a deep, saturated green that no other gemstone can replicate.

What makes emerald different

Unlike diamonds and sapphires, emeralds are valued differently. Inclusions (called “jardin” — French for garden) are expected and even embraced as part of the stone’s character. The primary value driver is color: the most desirable emeralds show a vivid, evenly saturated green without being too dark or too light.

Color first

In emeralds, color trumps clarity. A richly colored emerald with minor inclusions is more valuable than a perfectly clear but pale stone. Look for vivid green with good saturation.

Lab-grown advantage

Lab-grown emeralds typically have far fewer inclusions than mined stones, offering exceptional clarity alongside vivid color — a combination that is extremely rare in nature.

Care note: Emeralds are slightly softer than sapphires and diamonds (7.5–8 vs 9–10 Mohs). They are perfectly suitable for engagement rings but benefit from a protective setting like a bezel or halo. Avoid exposing emeralds to harsh chemicals or extreme temperature changes.

Pairing emeralds with metals

Yellow gold is the classic emerald pairing — the warm metal enhances the green beautifully. Rose gold creates a modern, warm contrast. White gold offers a contemporary look that lets the green stand on its own. Our 3D configurator lets you preview every combination in real time.
